A clean process is essential for success. Follow these steps:
Work in front of a flow hood or inside a still air box.
Wear gloves, a mask, and clean clothing.
Wipe all tools and surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.
Ensure your grain bags and culture syringe are sterile.
Flame-sterilize the syringe needle until red hot, then allow it to cool.
Inject your liquid culture or spores through the self-healing injection port.
Aim for several injection points for even colonization.
Keep the needle sterile throughout the process.
Cover the injection site with sterile tape.
Incubate at 75–80°F (24–27°C) in a clean, dark space.
Mycelium should begin spreading through the grain within several days.
Store unused grain bags at room temperature in a cool, dark place.
Keep unused syringes and liquid cultures refrigerated to extend shelf life.
Using the right amount of spawn helps reduce contamination and speeds up colonization.
Most growers use a 1:3 to 1:5 spawn-to-substrate ratio.
