CVG Substrate Instructions
Follow these simple steps to break up your colonized grain and mix it with substrate for optimal mushroom growth. This CVG substrate instructions guide will teach you how to grow manure loving mushrooms without the manure.
What You Need:
Colonized grain spawn
CVG Substrate
Clean hands or gloves
Sterile workspace
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Workspace
Wash your hands thoroughly or wear sterile gloves.
Clean your workspace with alcohol or disinfectant to prevent contamination. - Break Up the Colonized Grain
Use 1 pound of colonized grain for every 2 pounds of CVG substrate. Gently knead the grain bag to break apart the colonized grains.
Ensure the grains are evenly loosened for easy mixing. - Open the Grain Bag
Use sterile scissors or a clean blade to cut open the top of the bag.
Avoid direct contact with the grains to keep them contamination-free. - Mix with Substrate
Pour the colonized grain into your prepared substrate.
Gently mix until the grain is evenly distributed. - Pack and Incubate
Fill your grow container or bag with the mixed substrate.
Lightly pack it down, but do not compact it too much.
Seal the container and place it in a warm, dark area to colonize. - Monitor Growth
Over the next 10-14 days, white mycelium will spread throughout the substrate.
Once fully colonized, introduce fresh air and maintain humidity to begin fruiting.

What is the best ratio of grain spawn to CVG substrate?
The most common ratio is 1 part colonized grain spawn to 2 parts CVG substrate. This ensures enough mycelium to colonize the substrate quickly and reduce contamination risk.
What are common mistakes when using CVG substrate?
Common issues include poor mixing, over-compacting the substrate, or introducing contaminants by using dirty tools or hands. Always work in a clean environment for the best success.
How deep should I make the substrate layer in my monotub?
Aim for a substrate depth of 3–5 inches. This provides enough bulk for good moisture retention and yield without creating anaerobic (low oxygen) zones.
Can you grow dung-loving mushrooms without manure?
Yes, CVG substrate outperforms manure for many reasons. CVG substrate is manure-free and has higher success rates for species like Psilocybe cubensis because it mimics the moisture, texture, and nutrients they thrive in.
How long does it take for CVG substrate to colonize?
Once mixed with colonized grain spawn, CVG substrate typically takes 10–21 days to fully colonize under proper temperature and humidity conditions. Watch for thick white mycelium covering the surface.
